Arne Meurman obtained a doctorate in mathematics at Rutgers University, New Brunswick in 1981.
The title of the thesis was:
Characters of Rank Two Hyperbolic Lie Algebras as Functions at Quasiregular Cusps.
The thesis supervisor was James Ivan Lepowsky.
